General knowledge

The three trimesters, broadly

  • First trimester (weeks 1โ€“12): tiredness and nausea are very commonly reported; the body is doing enormous invisible work.
  • Second trimester (weeks 13โ€“27): many women describe more energy; the bump becomes visible; movements are often first felt.
  • Third trimester (weeks 28โ€“40+): growth, practice contractions, nesting urges, and the final countdown.
  • Every pregnancy is its own โ€” general patterns are company, not rules.

How estimates work

How a due date is generally calculated

  • The classic method adds 280 days (40 weeks) to the first day of the last period.
  • That's why 'weeks pregnant' counts from before conception โ€” the calendar starts at the last period.
  • Only a small share of babies arrive exactly on the estimated date; a couple of weeks either side is entirely common.
  • Care providers refine the estimate individually โ€” this is the general idea, for understanding.

General knowledge

Movement & kick awareness, in general

  • Many women first notice flutters somewhere around the middle of pregnancy.
  • Later on, babies commonly settle into a pattern of movement their mothers come to recognise.
  • The widely shared general principle: a woman getting to know her baby's usual pattern is the point โ€” and any change from that usual pattern is something to raise promptly with her care team. This guide never assesses movements itself.

What women commonly experience

Expected things & gentle cautions

  • Commonly reported companions: tiredness, heartburn, backache, vivid dreams, swollen feet, and big feelings.
  • Rest, small frequent meals, support pillows, and comfortable shoes are classic everyday helps.
  • Anything that feels wrong or worrying is always worth raising with the care team โ€” early, and without apology. Trusting her own sense of her body is a skill, not a bother.

Everyday practice

Gentle preparation, week by week

  • Middle months are a popular time to sort logistics: bags, lists, home corners for baby.
  • Writing questions down before appointments is a small habit with big returns.
  • Accepting help โ€” meals, lifts, hand-me-downs โ€” is preparation too.

Cost of having a baby โ€” planning framework (categories only)

One of the most useful things a family can do is see the categories in one place early. This worksheet lists categories to consider โ€” the site never supplies, suggests, or estimates prices. Research your own local market and fill in your own figures, here for a quick in-the-moment total or on paper to take away.
